In a surprising announcement, Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH has revealed plans to close its mustard production site in Düsseldorf, a move that could potentially mark the end of a long-standing mustard tradition in the state capital.

The production facility at Kieshecker Weg, operational since 1965, has been a significant part of Develey's operations, with over 6,000 tons of mustard annually produced for the brands Löwensenf and ABB-Mostert. The site employs a total of 54 staff, including 40 involved in production and 14 in administration.

Stefan Durach, CEO of Develey, informed the staff on Tuesday, 18.2., that the site will be closed. However, the brand and recipe for Löwensenf and ABB-Mostert, closely associated with Düsseldorf, will not be discontinued.

Löwensenf, a mustard brand that has been in operation since 1918, is deeply rooted in Düsseldorf's history. The closure of the production site may bring concerns about the future of this iconic brand, but the company assures that a socially acceptable solution will be found for the employees in Düsseldorf.

The lease for the production site expires at the end of 2026, and it is one of multiple production sites for Develey. The company acquired Löwensenf in 2001, and the mustard produced in Düsseldorf is made according to the purity law, using only natural ingredients.

While the days of the mustard tradition in Düsseldorf may be numbered, the brand and recipe will continue, albeit produced in a different plant. The company did not disclose the reasons for the closure or the location of the new production site.

This decision comes as a blow to the city of Düsseldorf, known for its rich culinary heritage, and raises questions about the future of local food production and tradition. The closure of the Löwensenf factory in Düsseldorf is a significant development that will undoubtedly impact the city's food landscape.
