Enccounter in Kokshetau transitions into blackmail scenario
In a recent court hearing led by the judge of the Kokshetau City Court of Akmola Region, three individuals - D., B., and Sh. - were considered in a criminal case for extortion and illegal detention.
The case revolved around the victim, T., who had travelled to Kokshetau to meet someone he had met on social media. However, instead of a friendly encounter, T. found himself in a harrowing situation. The defendants, all unemployed and acquainted with each other, decided to extort money from the victim.
To conceal their actions, they took the victim outside, put him in a car, and drove him to a secluded place. At this isolated location, the victim was beaten and forced to hand over his property, including a mobile phone worth 110,000 tenge, 25,000 tenge via mobile banking, and four microloans totalling 280,000 tenge. A medical examination later found that the victim had bruises and scratches as a result of the ordeal.
The court found the defendants guilty of their actions, which were coordinated and aimed at illegal enrichment at the expense of the victim. For his role in the extortion, D. was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison. The court considered D.'s secondary role and positive character reference in handing down the sentence.
B., on the other hand, was sentenced to 4 years in prison for extortion, but the sentence was suspended, taking into account his remorse and compensation for damages. B. was also exempt from criminal responsibility for illegal detention due to reconciliation.
Sh., however, was sentenced to 4 years in prison for the total criminal offenses.
During the hearing, the victim asked for the case against defendant B. to be dropped regarding the illegal detention due to reconciliation and compensation for damages. The court ruled to confiscate the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport vehicle used in the commission of the crime.
The court also considered the individual circumstances of each defendant, including their permanent residence, positive character references, and reconciliation with the victim on certain charges. The court did not find evidence of D.'s involvement in the illegal detention.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of caution when meeting strangers, especially in unfamiliar places. It also underscores the court's commitment to upholding justice and protecting its citizens from such criminal activities.
