Encountering a downpour?

In the event of a thunderstorm, it's crucial to take precautions to ensure safety. Bernd Böttiger, the federal doctor of the German Red Cross (DRK), offers some valuable advice to help you stay safe during these electrical storms.

Firstly, objects such as trees, roof structures, and even metal objects like bikes can catch fire or fall due to lightning strikes. To minimise the risk, it's best to avoid being the highest point and stay away from tall trees, masts, or antennas.

Umbrellas and walking sticks should be discarded during a thunderstorm. Touching other people can potentially increase the risk of injury from lightning, so it's advisable to maintain a distance of at least one meter from others. Crouching under an umbrella during a thunderstorm can lead to severe injuries if struck by lightning, so it's best to leave your umbrella behind.

If you find yourself caught in a thunderstorm in the great outdoors, the advice is to crouch down, preferably in a depression in the ground. The current will not flow through the entire body if only the balls of the feet are touching the ground. Feet should be close together in this position.

It's important to note that seeking shelter by touching others during a thunderstorm is not advisable. The current can flow between individuals, potentially causing harm.

In the unfortunate event of a lightning strike, Bernd Böttiger advises against any specific movements, but rather immediate resuscitation measures if a heart-circulation stop occurs. Quick help within the first five minutes is crucial.

Stay safe during thunderstorms by following these simple guidelines and remember, it's always better to be prepared than caught off guard.
