Energy Forecast 2024 Report
The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently unveiled its World Energy Outlook (WEO) 2024, an in-depth analysis of the world's journey towards a safer and more sustainable energy system. The event, hosted by PSIA, was marked by insightful interventions from various experts, including Arina Khotimsky, a second-year master's student in International Energy Transitions, Charlotte Roule, CEO of Storengy (ENGIE), and IEA Chief Energy Economist Tim Gould, among others.
The WEO 2024 was presented against a backdrop of escalating risks in the Middle East and heightened geopolitical tensions globally. The report explores a range of energy security issues that decision-makers face as they proceed with clean energy transitions.
IEA's World Energy Outlook 2024 identifies countries in the Middle East and petrostates heavily reliant on oil and gas revenues as particularly affected by increasing risks due to geopolitical tensions. These include key oil exporters where fiscal budgets are vulnerable to disruptions and the energy transition. With about 400 million people in the 19 most vulnerable petrostates, many with low human development index rankings, the IEA underscores the importance of diversification and risk mitigation policies in these regions due to the combined stress of geopolitical conflicts and the global energy transition.
PSIA Professor Giacomo Luciani introduced the event, setting the stage for a thought-provoking discussion. Denis Florin, who chairs the Group Energy and Infrastructure at Sciences Po Alumni, also contributed to the event.
The WEO 2024 discusses what more needs to be done to reach the world's climate goals and presents the biggest trends in energy demand and supply. For those who missed the live event, a replay is available for viewing.
The WEO 2024 serves as a comprehensive guide for policymakers, industry leaders, and students alike, providing valuable insights into the complex world of energy and its transition towards a sustainable future.
