Holy Cross SGA Senate Confirms New Class of 2024 Senators and Announces Initiatives

The Student Government Association (SGA) Senate at Holy Cross University confirmed the new Class of 2024 Senators on October 18, 2020. Among the new senators is Riley Peck '24, who has been actively involved in several initiatives to support student organisations (RSOs) and promote sexual respect on campus.

Riley Peck '24, the Director of Sexual Respect and Awareness for the SGA and a Relationship Peer Educator (RPE), proposed sessions for RSO captains and leaders to Caitlin MacNeil, the Associate Director for Leadership Development. These sessions aim to compensate for the lack of in-person bystander training for the class of 2024 and 2025 due to the pandemic.

On February 4th, Riley Peck '24 conducted a training session on "Bringing in the Bystander" for RSO Leaders. A second session is scheduled for February 12th. The "Bringing in the Bystander" training was developed by the University of New Hampshire and implemented at Holy Cross in 2014. The training is designed to empower students to intervene in potentially harmful situations and promote a safer campus environment.

However, the search results do not provide information on the person who held the "Bringing in the Bystander" training session for RSO leaders on February 12, 2024.

In addition to these initiatives, student organization leaders are required to organise constitutions, mission statements, blood pacts, and myHC subscriptions for re-recognition. Senators have been meeting with their assigned RSOs and promoting RSO events.

Abby Griffin '17, the Executive Cabinet Chief of Staff, is responsible for communication within and on behalf of the executive branch. Abby Griffin '17 was nominated and selected as the first-ever SGA Member of the Month.

Every student organization is required to complete their SGA re-recognition form. One lucky RSO group that participates in both sessions will receive a $100 surplus to their organization's budget.

In her SGA role, Riley Peck '24 assists with student matters but does not participate in official hearings. As an RPE, Riley Peck '24 helps provide support and education to prevent sexual violence on campus.

A study published in the Journal of Social and Political Psychology in 2018 confirmed the effectiveness of the UNH model in reducing issues at Holy Cross. The initiatives taken by the SGA Senate, particularly those led by Riley Peck '24, are expected to further strengthen this positive impact.

Zain Tirmizi, Paige Cohen, and Thais Velasquez were confirmed to the SGA 2020-2021 Cabinet. The SGA Senate continues to work diligently to support students and RSOs, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for all.
