The City University of New York (CUNY) is kicking off a new academic year with a host of exciting new programmes and initiatives. Here's a roundup of some of the key developments.

Lamis Fawaz, a freshman at York College, is planning to reactivate the college's chapter of Women in Aviation International. Fawaz is majoring in aviation management, and her passion for the field is evident as she aims to inspire other women to pursue careers in aviation.

In the realm of technology, CUNY is making strides in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. Lehman College has introduced a new Bachelor of Science in data science and AI, while CUNY's School of Professional Studies is offering a new Master of Science in generative AI. As part of the university-wide initiative, CUNY AI for Everyone, there are free Google courses in generative AI fundamentals, as well as non-credit courses, industry-led workshops, and in-person sessions with professionals from companies including Amazon, EY, JPMorgan Chase, and PwC.

Education is another area of focus for CUNY. Medgar Evers College has introduced CUNY's first fully online education degree, a Bachelor of Arts in childhood education. Baruch College has also unveiled its first doctoral program, an Ed.D. in higher education administration.

CUNY is also making higher education more accessible with its new initiative, the free community college programme. This initiative covers tuition, books, and fees for those between 25 and 55 who pursue degrees in high-demand fields.

The CUNY Immigration Assistance Project (CIAP) is another significant development. Funded by the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation, CIAP provides emergency consultations with attorneys for CUNY students and employees impacted by changing immigration policies.

Félix V. Matos Rodríguez serves as the Chancellor of CUNY, leading these exciting changes. Under his leadership, the CUNY Transfer Initiative has been implemented, enabling students to transfer credits seamlessly between CUNY colleges for the first time, potentially saving up to $1,220 in duplicated credits for bachelor's transfer students.

With these new programmes and initiatives, CUNY continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing quality education and opportunities for its students and employees. The 2022-2023 academic year promises to be a dynamic and transformative period for the university.
