Engaging in an evening art soiree at Tate? London art spaces prolong hours to cater to the burgeoning Gen Z art appreciation trend
Tate Modern Extends Opening Hours, Enhancing London's Cultural Nightlife
From September 26, 2025, Tate Modern will extend its opening hours, offering free evening access to all its galleries every Friday and Saturday until 9pm [1][2][3][4][5]. This move aims to cater to younger audiences and evening visitors, building on the popularity of its monthly Tate Modern Lates event.
The Tate Modern Lates feature live performances, DJ sets, artist talks, workshops, and other special programming, making it a significant part of London's nightlife. The extended hours will allow more visitors to experience these events, which will continue until 10pm during the Lates.
The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and the British Museum are also joining in, with the V&A staying open until 10pm on Fridays, and the British Museum extending its hours until 8:30pm on Fridays [3].
This trend of accommodating young adults and those who prefer cultural experiences outside typical daytime hours reflects a wider effort to make art more accessible. It supports London’s night-time economy, providing an alternative to traditional nightlife options.
Other museums and galleries in London also offer extended hours. The Barbican -Level Two Gallery is open every day apart from Monday until 7pm. The Photographers' Gallery is open on Thursday and Friday until 8pm. The National Gallery has also reinstated later opening hours.
The Serpentine Gallery is open on Saturday and Sunday until 7pm, while Moco Museum is open on Friday to Sunday until 8pm. The Whitechapel Gallery is open every Thursday until 9pm, and Frameless is open on Friday and Saturday until 10pm. V&A East Storehouse and Wellcome Collection are also open late, with the former open on Friday and Saturday until 10pm and the latter open on Thursdays until 8pm.
Tate Modern has been running Tate Late events since 2016 to attract younger patrons. The next Tate Modern Late event is scheduled for August 28. The Tate group offers a membership for 16-25 year olds, The Tate Collective, which is free to join and offers members discounts on Tate events.
Access to most of the capital's major museums and galleries, including the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery, is free of charge. The extended hours are a response to the record number of young people (70%) who attended the gallery's 25th birthday weekend.
