Engine Overhaul in Quest for Reclaimed Power: Continuation
In a workshop filled with the hum of machinery and the scent of fresh oil, a team of engineers embarked on a challenging mission: to restore a vintage "Suzuki" S-Type engine. The team, led by Shuhei Suzuki, Jiei Nakahodo, and Megumi Ishikuro, under the guidance of Minoru Ishikawa, faced major issues during the restoration of the engine's cylinder liners and a cracked connecting rod part.
The engine team, with Shinmei Industry's expertise, employed techniques like carefully shaving the cylinder liner surface and padding the cracked connecting rod part before machining it. The aim was to reproduce the engine's original state, including noise and vibration, by using original parts wherever possible.
However, the team encountered a critical issue with the head gasket, which prevents gas from escaping during combustion. As original materials could not be used for safety and environmental reasons, they had to design and manufacture a new head gasket. Nakahodo, who gained a deeper understanding of various car components through the project, particularly brakes, steering, and transmission, was able to complete this task in time for assembly.
Despite the delays, which were understandable given the engine's differences from modern engines and the need for unique solutions, the team persevered. After correcting the issue, the engine was successfully started, leading to applause and cheers from the team. Suzuki felt a strong sense of accomplishment, believing that it demonstrated the power of passion and conviction.
The ignition trial for the restored S-Type engine took place at a workshop for testing engines in development. However, the engine did not start during the trial, causing initial concern among the team. The root cause was discovered to be an overflow of fuel in the carburetor float chamber. The team promptly addressed the issue, and on July 20, they were able to fire up the restored engine as planned.
Ishikuro, who gained experience in the entire process up to physical manufacturing, learning about a field completely different from her regular work, found the project enlightening. All three team members found guidance from Minoru Ishikawa to be valuable. Nakahodo described him as a good father figure, Ishikuro as having a unique teaching style, and Suzuki as a mentor and grandfather figure.
The restored S-Type engine appeared smaller compared to modern engines tested in the same workshop. This project to restore the old Toyopet Racer from Toyota is supported and supervised by Toyota's heritage preservation team, classic car specialists, and dedicated restoration experts. The successful restoration of the "Suzuki" S-Type engine is a testament to the team's dedication, expertise, and passion for preserving automotive history.
