Engineering Upgrade Version 1.6

The Thames Tideway tunnel, the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the UK water industry, is set to deliver significant environmental benefits for London. This 25km tunnel under the River Thames will prevent tens of millions of tonnes of pollution previously poured into the river every year.

In a separate endeavour, the Queens Pier in Ramsey, Isle of Man, a Victorian landmark, is undergoing a restoration process. The Queens Pier, built by the Isle of Man Harbour Board, is a low water landing stage measuring 2,160ft long. The project to restore the three bays of the Queens Pier was initiated by the Isle of Man Government.

The Queens Pier Restoration Trust, responsible for the refurbishment of the Queens Pier, signed a five-year lease with the government in July 2017. The Trust is currently working on the refurbishment of the Pier, with the first bay expected to be completed next March, and the remaining two bays anticipated to be completed by the end of next year.

George Leslie Ltd, a privately-owned company based in Barrhead just outside Glasgow, is undertaking the restoration work. Established in 1964, GL is a resourceful infrastructure contractor, specializing in a diverse range of civil engineering works. The company, which has an annual turnover of around £50m, also undertakes projects throughout Scotland, including more remote Highland and Island locations.

Interestingly, the construction of the Thames Tideway tunnel is using an eco-friendly system known as 'More by River' for the removal of spoil. This system reduces the need for lorry movements, thereby minimising carbon emissions and traffic congestion. The tunnel will use gravity to transfer waste eastwards.

The Queens Pier, originally built as a low water landing stage, is a testament to the rich architectural history of the Isle of Man. The restoration of this iconic structure is a significant step towards preserving this heritage for future generations.

The completion of the Thames Tideway tunnel and the restoration of the Queens Pier in Ramsey are exciting developments that underscore the commitment to environmental conservation and heritage preservation in the UK and Isle of Man, respectively.
