English amateur soccer team breaks English football record for being the first to do so in three different instances this season
In a challenging season for long-distance travel, Truro City made the 930-mile round trip to the Truro City Stadium in Carlisle for a National League clash against Carlisle United.
The journey, over 14 hours and 878 miles long, was not without its challenges. Despite the hopes of building on their recent run of form, Truro City were unable to keep their unbeaten run up, with Carlisle United defeating them comfortably 3-0.
Luke Armstrong scored two goals for Carlisle United, while Regan Martyn Linney added another. The defeat left Truro City's supporters with little to celebrate on their long journey home.
Carlisle manager Mark Hughes expressed sympathy for Truro City's long travel before the match, acknowledging the physical and logistical demands it placed on the team. Truro City's manager, too, mentioned that his team is used to long-distance travel and that they have a clear plan for timely and physically prepared travel.
Supporting Truro City certainly isn't for the faint-hearted this season due to the long away days. The Truro City fans either traveled up on Friday night, or went by car or plane on the day of the match.
The mammoth trip won't stay at the top of the history books for long as Truro still have two more away trips this season that are even longer. They will also have to traipse themselves up to Hartlepool in November, which is a 890-mile round effort.
The previous record for English football's longest away trip was a 832-mile round trip for the Championship clash between Newcastle United and Plymouth Argyle in the 2009/10 season. Interestingly, this season, Truro City are not the only team facing such long journeys. The two other teams that travel further than Truro City's trip to Carlisle in the 2023 English Football League season, surpassing the current record, are Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City.
In league games alone, Truro City face 21 round trips of more than eight hours. After initially struggling with five losses in their opening games, Truro City steadied the ship with a 3-0 win over Boston United and a draw at home to Aldershot. However, the long journeys and the physical demands have taken their toll, with the defeat against Carlisle United being a setback in their season.
As the season progresses, Truro City will need to find ways to overcome the challenges posed by their long-distance travel if they are to compete at the top end of the National League.
