Enhanced armament for Montreal transit constables is advocated by the Workplace Safety Board.

In a recent report published by The Canadian Press on Sept. 3, 2025, the Quebec workplace safety board addressed the safety concerns of transit constables working within Montreal's public transit agency. The report was produced in response to two complaints about constables' safety within the transit network.

The report, however, did not specify any new recommendations or proposals regarding the safety of transit constables. It also did not mention any new weapons that should be given to the constables, beyond the current arsenal of batons, handcuffs, and pepper-spray.

Interestingly, the union representing transit constables has suggested that they should be armed with electroshock weapons, such as Tasers, to improve their safety. This suggestion, however, was not addressed in the report.

On the other hand, the Quebec occupational health and safety authority has recommended that Montreal traffic police officers be equipped with tasers to improve their safety.

The increase in calls to constables related to disruptive behavior within the network has been a growing concern for the transit agency. The leadership considers the metro system to be a last-resort shelter for individuals struggling with drug addiction and mental illness.

Despite the challenges, the transit agency continues to strive for the safety and well-being of its constables, ensuring they have the necessary resources to maintain a secure environment for passengers and themselves.
