In the realm of digital photography, the latest version of DigiKam, version 8.7, has been unveiled, offering a host of improvements and new features that make managing and organising photos easier and more efficient.

One of the key highlights of DigiKam 8.7 is the enhancement in the face management workflow, which includes several fixes to streamline the process. The update also introduces an AI-powered auto-rotation tool for images, making it simpler to ensure photos are always displayed correctly. This tool uses deep learning to detect the correct orientation of images, providing a seamless user experience.

To cater to a wider range of users, DigiKam 8.7 now offers options to check if the system can utilise the GPU for AI tasks. OpenCL via OpenCV is used for general GPU support, while the CUDA framework is leveraged for NVIDIA GPUs. A new test button in the settings ensures GPU support is working correctly.

The RAW decoder Libraw has been updated, supporting over 1,260 camera models. This expansion in compatibility ensures that more photographers can enjoy the benefits of DigiKam.

Moreover, DigiKam 8.7 comes with improved metadata management, thanks to the inclusion of a recent ExifTool version. The update also resolves PKG installation issues on a recent macOS version.

Users can also take advantage of the new AI-powered face recognition system, which remembers rejected face matches and offers the next best option. This feature can be integrated into the Batch Queue Manager for easy batch processing.

DigiKam 8.7 supports 61 interface languages and offers documentation in 16 languages, making it accessible to a global audience. The source code for this version is hosted on KDE's GitLab instance.

Perhaps one of the most welcome changes for users is that DigiKam 8.7 no longer remains active in memory after quitting, ensuring a more efficient use of system resources.
