Enhanced comfort for travelers in Karlsruhe due to land improvements
Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport is set to undergo significant changes in the coming years, with the support of the German government and various funding initiatives.
The Minister of Transport, Winfried Hermann, has given his backing to an application for airport coordination, which aims to give the airport more control over its flight plans, allowing for a more even distribution of departure times. This coordination is expected to alleviate congestion and reduce delays.
In response to staff shortages due to illness, the airport is taking measures to create a pool of control forces and a reserve of personnel. The Minister of Transport, Patrick Schnieder, has been asked to prioritize the processing of this application to ensure its swift implementation.
To address congestion at check-in, the airport is acquiring two additional security lanes, with the initial costs covered by the Government Presidency of Stuttgart. The state is also helping with the acquisition of a new baggage screening system, which will be funded by the Air Security Fee. The RPS will acquire this new system, with the costs borne by the Ministry of Transport.
Refinancing for both the security lanes and the baggage screening system will be handled through the Air Security Fee.
In a bid to improve conditions for passengers, the Ministry of Transport is providing 2.4 million euros for improvements at the airport. These funds will be used to address issues such as insufficient staff, short-term sick leave, and unreliable baggage handling technology, which have caused problems for around 700 passengers in the first half of 2025.
The airport is also taking situation-specific measures on site to improve passenger flow and minimize "standstills" that passengers have to endure.
Looking ahead, the financing of the coordination of flight operations at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport will be taken over by the Federal Government of Germany in 2026.
