Improvements Coming to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport

The Ministry of Transport is taking action to address flight delays at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport. Berthold Frieß, Ministerial Director at the Ministry of Transport, has emphasised the urgency of the situation.

To alleviate congestion at the airport, the Ministry is providing funds for a multi-stage baggage screening system (MBS) and two additional security lanes. The costs of these initiatives will be covered by the Ministry initially, and refinanced through the aviation security fee, as was the case with previous funding from the federal government.

The new MBS is expected to eliminate congestion at check-in and reduce flight delays. The Government Presidency of Stuttgart will acquire the MBS at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, while the Government Presidency of Stuttgart will also acquire the two additional security lanes.

Transport Minister Winfried Hermann has asked Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder to prioritise the processing of the airport coordination application. The application, made to the Federal Ministry of Transport in May, aims to enable the airport to have a say in the flight plans of airlines, so that departure times can be spread out. Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport has submitted an application for airport coordination as an air traffic coordinated airport, effective from the summer flight schedule 2026.

In addition to these measures, the airport is taking site-specific measures to improve passenger flow. This includes addressing staff shortages due to illness, such as creating a pool of control forces and a reserve of personnel.

In the first half of 2025, around 700 passengers at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport experienced flight delays. The Ministry of Transport is providing 2.4 million euros to improve the situation for passengers at the airport.

The state is pre-financing 2.4 million euros due to the termination of an agreement regarding aviation security control technology funding by the federal government in autumn 2024. The costs for additional security personnel at the airport are typically covered by the airport or relevant local authorities, but specific details are not provided in the available information.

Coordination target values are proposed by Fluko GmbH. The aim of airport coordination is to enable the airport to have a say in the flight plans of airlines, so that departure times can be spread out.

The new measures are a welcome development for passengers at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, who have experienced flight delays in the past. With the implementation of the new baggage screening system, additional security lanes, and airport coordination, passengers can look forward to a smoother and more efficient travel experience.
