Enhanced conditions for travelers in Karlsruhe due to land improvements
The Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport is set to undergo significant changes, with the aim of improving the overall passenger experience. Minister Winfried Hermann, the current Minister of Transport, has asked Federal Minister Patrick Schnieder to prioritise the processing of the airport's application for airport coordination.
The airport has submitted an application to become an air traffic coordinated airport, effective from the summer flight schedule 2026. This coordination is expected to give the airport more control over the flight plans of airlines, enabling departure times to be distributed more evenly and reducing potential delays.
To facilitate this transition, the state is pre-financing 2.4 million euros. This funding will be used to acquire two additional control lanes and a multi-level baggage screening system (MLBS). The acquisition and implementation of these facilities are expected to take around six months due to complex procurement procedures and manufacturing.
The costs of the MLBS will be covered by the Ministry of Transport, with refinancing through the aviation security fee. Similarly, the initial costs of the two additional control lanes will be borne by the Ministry of Transport, with the State Government of Stuttgart responsible for their future financing.
The personnel costs for staffing the control lanes will be covered by the State Government of Stuttgart initially, but will ultimately be refinanced through the aviation security fee. This is part of a broader strategy to alleviate staff shortages due to illness, with the airport implementing a pool of control forces and a reserve of personnel.
In the first half of 2025, around 700 passengers experienced delays due to insufficient staff, short-term sick leave, and unreliable baggage handling technology. The acquisition of the MLBS is designed to eliminate congestion at check-in and reduce such delays.
In addition to these measures, the airport is implementing situation-based measures on site to improve passenger flow. The aim is to minimize "standstills" that passengers have to endure, ensuring a smoother and more efficient travel experience.

The improvements at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport are part of a broader effort to enhance the travel experience for passengers across Germany. The Minister of Transport, Winfried Hermann, has been a strong advocate for these changes, supporting the establishment of airport coordination for Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport. The aim is to create a more efficient and reliable travel experience for all.
