The world of smartphones is gearing up for a significant change, with the potential for universal eSIM and USB-C standardization opening up new opportunities for magnetic accessories. One such device set to benefit from this shift is the Google Pixel 10.

The Pixel 10, Google's latest offering, will be equipped with the newer iteration of Qi, known as Qi2.2. This move, coupled with the expanding market for magnetic accessories, could make these add-ons a common feature across multiple phone brands, including Android devices like the Pixel 10.

Interestingly, accessories designed for Apple's MagSafe system can be used seamlessly on Android devices, such as the Pixel 10. This cross-compatibility could help increase the popularity of magnetic accessories, making them a staple feature in the smartphone industry.

The Google Pixel 10 series, however, does not include reverse wireless charging, a feature found in some Samsung Galaxy phones. This means the Pixel 10 cannot function as a mini wireless charger, a capability that allows devices like the Galaxy S25 line and the OnePlus 13 to charge other devices and even the Galaxy Watch.

The Moto Z series, which included the Moto Z2 Play from 2017, and the Pixel 10 series share a common thread—magnetic accessories. In the case of the Moto Z series, these were called Moto Mods, offering a variety of functionalities such as decorative shells, battery packs, and even a JBL speaker attachment. Unfortunately, Moto Mods were discontinued after the Moto Z4 in 2019.

The development of the open Qi wireless charging standard, integrating magnets and faster charging speeds, was initiated by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), a group founded by leading companies including Samsung, Apple, and others. This push towards universal compatibility and improvements, including the Qi 2.2 standard for higher power delivery and magnetic alignment, is gaining traction, with Apple's iPhone 16 series supporting Qi 2.2 for 25W wireless charging.

Belkin, a leading brand in charging solutions, has introduced a new 2-in-1 Qi2.2 charger that supports 25W wireless charging speeds, priced at $60. Notably, this is slightly cheaper than Belkin's prior MagSafe-certified edition of the same stand, which retails at $77.

The Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL have received positive comments for their design, but whether they will revive the popularity of magnetic accessories remains to be seen. Regardless, the future of smartphone accessories is looking more magnetic than ever.
