Enhanced energy security due to the launch of a new government financial resource
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has announced the launch of the Community Energy Fund, a new initiative aimed at boosting energy security and growing the economy. The fund, set to become available in early autumn of 2025, will be managed by the Energy Saving Trust.
At the heart of this initiative are local communities, as Minister for Nuclear and Networks, Andrew Bowie, has stated. The Community Energy Fund will provide a share of £10m to communities across England, with the funds directed back into the community, supporting local schemes such as community gardens and youth employment groups.
The implementation of the Community Energy Fund involves local net zero hubs, which will deliver the funds and oversee the delivery of the energy projects. This money-orientated system has allowed for an expansion of the fund's coverage, now encompassing both rural and urban areas.
The Community Energy Fund will support various local renewable energy projects, including rooftop solar partnerships, battery storage, and electric vehicle charging points. These energy projects could potentially attract further investment from the private sector, bringing long-term benefits to the communities involved.
The success of the previous rural community energy fund has contributed to the implementation of the new system. The expansion includes delivery through local net zero hubs, which will serve as a bridge between the government and the communities, ensuring that the funds are used effectively and that the projects have a lasting impact.
These energy projects could have a significant impact, bringing costs down, building stronger communities, and securing clean energy for generations to come. The Community Energy Fund for England will empower communities to drive forward innovative energy projects, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for all.
