Enhanced Security Measures at Spinne Junction for Cyclists and Pedestrians
On September 5th, 2025, a significant change was introduced at the intersection of the B51 bypass and Weseler Street in Munster, commonly known as the "spider." The intersection, one of the city's busiest, saw the implementation of new right-turn lanes, jointly put into operation by Streets.NRW and the city of Munster.
This decision was prompted by a serious accident in the spring of 2025, which led to a meeting of the accident commission. Initially, the commission decided to install a stop sign at this location. However, the new right-turn lanes have proven to be a more permanent solution.
The new right-turn lanes provide more safety and clearer traffic flow for all road users. Pedestrians and cyclists can now cross the intersection separately from turning vehicles, offering improved safety for all. The bike lane, which had already been marked red previously, also benefits from this renovation.
In a second step, the right-turn lane will be expanded to two lanes in the fall of 2025. Some temporary traffic lights have been installed and will be given their final position after the renovation. The new traffic lights, providing more safety and clearer traffic flow, are a welcome addition to the busy intersection.
With these improvements, the future looks promising for the "spider" intersection. It will offer improved safety and traffic flow for all road users, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike, making commuting in Munster smoother and safer.
