Enhancing airport crisis readiness to match global safety benchmarks at MAHB
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has announced its commitment to strengthening emergency management preparedness at its airport network, as highlighted by Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, the managing director of MAHB, during the 14th Airport Fire and Rescue Service (AFRS) Training Graduation Parade.
The event, which took place at Melaka International Airport (LTAM) Batu Berendam, saw 159 trainees complete 23 weeks of intensive training. The parade was officiated by the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Melaka, Tun Mohd Ali Rustam.
The AFRS training, an essential element in preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, tests physical and mental endurance, builds discipline, camaraderie, spiritual strength, and provides technical knowledge and understanding of civil aviation laws in line with international standards.
The training program consisted of three main phases: transition and consolidation, basic training, and 'on the job training'. The AFRS, considered the frontline of flight operation safety, is required to act quickly, be knowledgeable, disciplined, and courageous in handling emergencies on the ground.
Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani emphasized the importance of compliance in maintaining the highest level of emergency management and operations at Malaysia's airports. He reiterated MAHB's commitment to ensuring that every member and officer of the AFRS complies with the Civil Aviation (Aerodrome Operations) Regulations 2016.
MAHB is also committed to meeting the requirements set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) in line with the Standards and Recommended Practices outlined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
As of July 2025, nearly 60 million passengers have used MAHB's airport network across Malaysia. The level of preparedness is crucial for maintaining global confidence in Malaysia's airports and ensuring a positive experience for visitors to Malaysia. The AFRS, the heart of airport safety, plays a vital role in this endeavour.
In conclusion, the 14th AFRS Training Graduation Parade marked a significant step forward in MAHB's efforts to enhance emergency management preparedness at its airport network. The commitment to this cause underscores MAHB's dedication to providing a safe and secure environment for the millions of passengers who use its airports each year.
