Enhancing Railway Connections between Munich and Prague
Next year, other German metropolises will be better connected to Prague as both Bavaria and the Czech Republic are making a new attempt to improve the Munich-Prague route. This ambitious project, which requires a long-term, passenger-oriented perspective, has been emphasised by Christian Bernreiter, Transport Minister of Bavaria.
The Munich-Prague route, known for its challenging technical prerequisites, is currently served by the state railway on the Bavarian side and the Czech state railway on the Czech side. The new attempt aims to introduce more modern trains from 2028, replacing the existing ones from 2031.
The route presents unique challenges as trains must be equipped for three different power systems when passing overhead lines. On the Czech side, the route is a long-distance route, while on the Bavarian side, it is a local traffic connection.
A previous tender for new vehicles on the line, aimed at introduction from 2028, failed. However, the award for the new tender is expected no earlier than mid-2027, with the new attempt expected to begin at the end of this year.
Both countries are hoping for EU funding for the new project. In a positive development, from May next year, there will be a direct connection from Prague to Copenhagen, with stops in Dresden, Berlin, and Hamburg.
It is not yet clear which company or bidder has applied to develop new trains for the Munich–Prague route starting 2028. Changes in shunting procedures, personnel requirements, and catering savings are expected to be significant in the new tender.
