Enhancing Seafarers' Health Through Modern Technological Advancements
In a collaborative project spearheaded by the Hamburg Central Institute for Occupational Medicine and Maritime Medicine (ZfAM), a Hamburg project team has developed digital tools for health management on merchant ships. The project, named E-Healthy Ship, aims to improve the health and wellbeing of seafarers worldwide.
The primary focus of the E-Healthy Ship project is an e-learning platform called Crewhealthy. This platform offers visual tips on nutrition, sports, mental health, sleep quality, and relaxation techniques on board. It also includes learning courses, weekly quiz games, a cookbook, and a tool for ordering food.
The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Hamburg Authority for Health and Consumer Protection (BGV), and the project partners themselves, with a total volume of around 1.8 million euros.
Since mid-2018, health data from the crew has been collected on test ships of Hamburg shipping companies. The collected data has been used to develop new health-related modules for the existing application "Cloud Fleet Manager". These modules allow for digital recording of sick leave on board, central management and distribution of medication, and crew members to access their own illness and treatment cases.
Shipping companies can opt for an individual performance-based evaluation in points for the E-learning platform. However, no new information about shipping companies opting for this evaluation is provided in the current context.
The Hamburg Central Institute for Occupational Medicine and Maritime Medicine (ZfAM) is an institution of the Hamburg Justice Authority and is closely linked to the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg. The main task of the ZfAM is to conduct scientific and practical investigations to gain deeper insights into the effects of work on human health.
Over 1.5 million people worldwide are currently working as seafarers, and the E-Healthy Ship project aims to make a significant impact on their health and wellbeing. Further information about the project can be found on the project website, e-healthy-ship.eu, or in a press release on hamburg.de.
