Grütters GmbH Wins Taspo Award and Shares Insights on Attracting Skilled Workers

In a recent event, the city of Nordhorn, known for its beautifully maintained green spaces, played host to the annual "North Business Day" organised by the Training Initiative. The event, attended by around 35 representatives from member companies across northern Germany, focused on the pressing issue of attracting young talent to the garden and landscape construction sector, which is currently facing a skills shortage.

One of the key speakers at the event was Josef Grütters, Managing Director of Grütters GmbH from Sonsbeck. Grütters GmbH, a member company of the Training Initiative, recently received the coveted "Taspo Award" in gardening circles. However, Grütters shared an interesting perspective, stating that money is not the best incentive for binding skilled workers. Instead, he emphasised the importance of allowing team members their own competencies, letting go, and allowing majority decisions as key to creating lasting motivation and making Grütters GmbH an attractive employer.

The Training Initiative has been working to maintain high quality standards in training companies of the garden and landscape construction sector for nearly eight years. Reinhold Schnieders, a trainer from the "Green" department of the city of Nordhorn, presented the training company to the guests and explained the training concept. Schnieders, who expressed a desire to achieve more in training, took many impulses from the Business Day to ensure that the city of Nordhorn continues to count among the top training companies in Germany.

The city of Nordhorn values the Training Initiative's active exchange of ideas and its efforts to make the gardener profession more attractive. In line with this, the city offers a total of nine different vocational training options. Schnieders stated that as a trainer, one must be passionate and dedicated, and never stop improving, which also motivates the new starters.

The city of Nordhorn has been a member of the Training Initiative since 2012. Other notable companies on the 2025 shortlist for the TASPO Awards in the garden and landscape industry include klimafarmer GmbH with the product "klimapott. Der Topf, der düngt und Klima schützt", Hortinex GmbH, ArboBoost GmbH, and COMPO GmbH.

Mayor Thomas Berling, who has a background in garden and landscape construction, welcomed the guests at the municipal building yard on Enschedestraße. Berling and the city of Nordhorn have received many compliments for its well-designed and maintained green spaces. The mission statement of Grütters GmbH, a recipient of the Taspo Award, states: "We serve customers who are enthusiastic about us with a team of entrepreneurially thinking and self-responsible employees."

The city of Nordhorn is concerned about the decreasing interest in craft professions. However, events like the North Business Day and the involvement of organisations like the Training Initiative are steps in the right direction towards addressing this issue and making the gardener profession more attractive to young people.
