Entrepreneurs focusing on eco-friendly solutions for a greener world
In Uganda, the majority of the population, particularly those under 25, earn their living in agriculture and depend on natural resources. To address this, and to create opportunities for youth in green sectors, the "Green Colleges" initiative by Welthungerhilfe has been launched in Uganda and India. This initiative focuses on sustainable education that equips young people with skills and knowledge in ecotourism and other environmentally friendly professions.
The Green Colleges aim to integrate education on sustainable agriculture, conservation, and eco-friendly tourism practices. By preparing youth for participation in the growing green economy through practical skills development, the initiative fosters awareness and capacity building for sustainable natural resource management. This approach promotes both environmental stewardship and socioeconomic empowerment.
Located at 15 training centres across Uganda, the Green Colleges are training around 1,000 young people in various sustainable professions such as vegetable cultivation, solar technology, juice processing, mobile phone repair, beekeeping, fish farming, basket weaving, and tourism. Students learn about warning sounds of danger, behaviour when encountering wildlife, and other eco-tourism practices.
The training at the Green Colleges includes learning how to process and sell fruit, build energy-saving cookers, install solar panels, practice organic farming, and even begin a career in ecotourism. After graduation, the graduates receive a start-up package for their own business, including seeds and advertising tools.
Over the course of the project, 400 young people gain work experience through two-month internships. The graduates of the Green Colleges become "ecopreneurs", entrepreneurs in sustainable professions. These ecopreneurs have the opportunity to present their products and skills to potential customers and employers during the regional campaign.
A regional campaign is being organized to raise awareness of the Green Colleges and the importance of sustainable natural resource management. The initiative aims to produce a new, more environmentally aware generation that can preserve resources. An efficient and sustainable agricultural economy is the clear answer to combat the effects of climate change in Uganda.
The concept of Green Colleges was developed in India and focuses on training programs for sustainable professions. Many young people in Uganda are unemployed due to the inability to afford school fees, resulting in a lack of necessary qualifications for apprenticeships. The Green Colleges link education and job opportunities with resource preservation, addressing youth unemployment by opening career paths in emerging green sectors, which contributes to broader sustainability efforts in these countries.
As climate change continues to affect Uganda, causing issues like deforestation, pollution, and overuse of grazing land, the Green Colleges offer a promising solution. By equipping young people with the skills to create sustainable businesses and promoting environmental stewardship, the Green Colleges are empowering Uganda's youth to build a better, more sustainable future.
