Ethereum reveals ambitious 2026 user experience plan to enhance layer-2 compatibility - Insights shared!
The Ethereum Foundation has announced an ambitious new roadmap aimed at enhancing the system's user experience and scalability. This focus on "scaling 1, scaling blobs, and improving UX" was revealed in June and forms a significant part of the Foundation's plans moving forward.
One of the key areas of focus is Layer-2 (L2) interoperability. The Foundation aims to address the pressures of fragmentation on the Ethereum experience and its economy, caused in part by the growing number of L2 solutions like Arbitrum, Base, and Polygon.
The roadmap outlines a three-tiered approach to achieving L2 interoperability: 'Initialisation', 'Acceleration', and 'Finalisation'.
In the first phase, the Ethereum Foundation will roll out an 'Open Intents Framework'. This innovative system allows users to state their desired outcomes, and the system determines the best way to make it happen across L2 chains.
During the 'Acceleration' phase, the team aims for fast block confirmation in 15-30 seconds, reducing waiting time by 98%. The Foundation also plans to improve latency from the current 19 minutes to 15 seconds for L2 cross-chain transactions.
The 'Finalisation' stream will focus on enhancing cross-chain settlement and L1 finality through more research and development. L-2 settlement, which currently takes up to seven days, is expected to be achieved by Q1 2026.
The Ethereum Foundation is also exploring changes to the Beacon chain and alternative consensus protocols to bring down finality to seconds. They are researching and developing projects like Proto-Danksharding and cross-rollup communication protocols to enhance interoperability between Layer-2 networks, with significant results expected around 2024 to 2025.
Barnabe Monnot, Co-lead of Protocol at EF, has mentioned that they will explore new wallet designs, including privacy-focused Kohaku.
This growth, which is the third consecutive month of growth, could potentially spill over to ETH's value. The Ethereum Foundation's plans for L2 interoperability provide critical entry points and scaling opportunities for Ethereum.
This news comes as the on-chain volume for Ethereum hits a yearly high of $324 billion in August. The Foundation's reorganized treasury operations, aimed at leveraging Ethereum's DeFi offerings, could contribute to this growth.
