The United States and Europe are in discussions to impose new sanctions and secondary tariffs against Russia, as tensions continue to escalate following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The European Union is considering imposing sanctions on approximately six Russian banks and energy companies, according to anonymous sources. This potential move would mark the 20th sanctions package imposed by the EU since the invasion.

The future EU sanctions package may include tougher sanctions on Russian shadow fleet vessels and oil traders in third countries. Moreover, the package may ban reinsurance for tankers on the list.

The US is also weighing sanctions on energy giants Rosneft and Lukoil, and is prepared to increase pressure on Russia, as stated by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in an interview with NBC on Sunday 7 September.

US President Donald Trump has so far refrained from imposing direct sanctions on Russia. However, he has taken action against India by doubling tariffs on goods from India to 50% due to its continued purchases of Russian oil.

In an effort to coordinate measures, a delegation of European Union officials will visit Washington this week to discuss potential additional sanctions. The goal of these sanctions is to cause the collapse of the Russian economy and force Putin to negotiate peace with Ukraine.

Some European leaders will also visit the United States to discuss ways to resolve the Russo-Ukrainian war. This week, an EU delegation will visit Washington to discuss the possibility of joint action with the United States.

The sanctions are intended to be a strong message to Russia, signalling the international community's determination to maintain peace and stability in the region. The discussions between the US and Europe demonstrate a united front against Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine.
