The European Union has extended the deadline for carmakers to comply with CO2 fleet limits for the passenger car and truck sectors, as part of the European Commission's Action Plan for the European Automobile Industry. The plan, presented on March 5, 2025, aims to improve the CO2 fleet limits for the period from 2026 to 2030.

The Action Plan continues the Strategic Dialogue at the EU level, as previously announced. It addresses key demands from Baden-Württemberg, as stated by Winfried Kretschmann, Minister President. The goal of decarbonization is clear, but the paths to achieve it are open, according to Kretschmann.

The plan includes measures to accelerate the ramp-up of Electromobility and a Europe-wide rollout of charging infrastructure for passenger cars and trucks. The EU Commission has announced further funding for this purpose. Flexibility in penalty payments for non-compliance with the CO2 fleet limits has also been proposed.

Baden-Württemberg will continue to actively participate in the Strategic Dialogue at the EU level. Kretschmann emphasized the effectiveness of dialogue formats that bring all relevant actors to the table.

In addition, the EU Commission has announced plans for a Europe-wide rollout of charging infrastructure for passenger cars and trucks. The Commission presented proposals for this initiative, aiming to make the European leading industry more competitive.

The European Commission's Action Plan for the European Automobile Industry is a significant step towards a more sustainable and competitive European automobile industry. It demonstrates the commitment of the EU to address the challenges faced by the industry and to support its transition towards electromobility.
