EU prohibits certain gel nail polish varieties
The European Union (EU) has taken a significant step towards regulating the cosmetics industry by banning the use of trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) in gel nail polish, effective from September 1. The ban applies to all 27 member countries of the EU.
TPO is a photoinitiator, a substance that hardens rapidly and cures by absorbing UV or LED light. It is not only used in gel nail polish but also in other products such as inks and adhesives. In gel manicures, TPO is valued for its low-yellowing properties and broad UV-absorption qualities, contributing to the durability and long-lasting nature of these treatments.
The hardened, glassy seal formed by polishes containing TPO helps the manicure stay intact for longer than a traditional treatment. However, the European Commission has amended its regulations on May 12 to determine TPO as specifically toxic for human reproduction. While studies have not established a direct link between TPO and health risks in humans, high doses of TPO have been linked to problems with fertility and development in rodents.
The ban on TPO may impact the popularity of gel manicures in Europe. Salons may need to change their offerings for durable manicures and pedicures, as TPO is now considered a prohibited substance in cosmetic products by the European Commission.
Manufacturers are already offering alternatives to TPO-containing gel nail polish. For instance, UV gels that are completely free of TPO and other safer photoinitiators used for curing gels under LED or UV light are becoming available. Doriana Cosmetics, for example, offers 100% TPO-free UV gels as safe alternatives. The ban will be in effect until September 1, 2025, giving salons and manufacturers time to adjust to the new regulations.
The EU's decision to ban TPO in gel nail polish is part of a larger effort to ensure the safety and health of its citizens. As more information about the potential risks of certain chemicals in cosmetic products comes to light, regulations like these are crucial in protecting public health.
