EU Proposal Aims to Boost the Count of European Union Nationals within the Union

In a significant diplomatic move, Chancellor Christian Stocker visited Cyprus on Thursday, marking a new chapter in the relationship between the two nations. The visit, which took place ahead of Cyprus' EU Council presidency in the first half of 2026, was filled with productive discussions and a shared commitment to collaboration.

The central issue of the visit was migration, with both countries having been disproportionately affected by illegal migration. Recognising the need for a paradigm shift at the EU level, Chancellor Stocker and Cypriot state representatives discussed the necessity of close cooperation with countries of origin and transit, and the implementation of new, innovative approaches to address migration issues.

During his meetings with Nikos Christodoulides, the President and Head of Government of Cyprus, and Annita Demetriou, the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, the Chancellor also touched upon topics of current European politics, issues of competitiveness, and the recent developments regarding Russia's aggression against Ukraine, as well as the situation in the Middle East.

The visit also highlighted the strong economic ties between Austria and Cyprus. The Cypriot economy is robust, and Austrian expertise is highly regarded. Both nations are collaborating closely within the European Union, focusing on strengthening competitiveness by creating an innovation- and business-friendly environment and reducing administrative burdens. Austrian know-how is already successfully employed in numerous projects with Cypriot institutions through the 'Best Practice Austria' initiative.

Austria is an important partner for Cyprus, particularly in evacuating or providing consular support to Austrian citizens from crisis regions in the Middle East. Cyprus, in turn, is a popular destination for Austrian tourists, and more and more Cypriots are spending their holidays in Austria.

The Chancellor's visit also included meetings with the city administration of Nicosia and at the House of Representatives, where he had a working meeting with the President of the House, Annita Demetriou. Joint strategic measures in the areas of security and defense were deemed crucial given the current geopolitical situation.

The Chancellor expressed his pleasure at the visit, stating that Austria and Cyprus are closely connected in many ways and that they have a friendship and readiness to support each other whenever necessary.

Since 1964, Austria has contributed to the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus, a visible sign of solidarity. The visit marks a significant step forward in the relationship between Austria and Cyprus, with both nations looking forward to continued collaboration in the future.
