€128 million allocation for construction of the Emmy-Noether Gymnasium, as approved by city authorities.
The city of Offenbach is set to welcome a new addition to its educational landscape with the construction of the Emmy-Noether-Gymnasium, scheduled to begin in spring 2024. The new school will rise on a former freight transfer station, marking another step in Offenbach's commitment to modern learning conditions and sustainable development.
Construction logistics are expected to be challenging due to dense construction, parallel projects in Quarter 4.0, and strict environmental regulations. To manage the process, an electronic access system for up to 300 workers and an online time window for transport vehicles will be implemented. Measures to protect endangered species of wall lizards are also part of the planning for the construction of the gymnasium.
The new building, spanning approximately 10,000 square meters, will adhere to the KfW-40 energy efficiency standard. This includes the installation of a photovoltaic system, heat pump, district heating, and rainwater harvesting. The school will be barrier-free and sustainable, exceeding legal minimum requirements for accessibility, featuring elevators, tactile structures, retreat areas, and barrier-free restrooms.
The design of the roofs will create a total of around 8,500 square meters of break areas, including learning islands, a green classroom, a school garden, table tennis tables, a calisthenics area, and a "green frame" of climbing plants. These spaces will provide students with ample opportunities for outdoor learning and recreation.
The gymnasium will have six floors up to grade 10 and five floors in the upper grades. It will feature 51 classrooms, ten science labs, workshops, art rooms, and multifunctional areas for music and theater. A cafeteria with a capacity of around 1,080 meals per day, a library, and an auditorium will ensure full-day operation from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. A three-court sports hall with a separate entrance will also be available to sports clubs.
Since 2007, Offenbach has invested over 725 million euros in the new construction and renovation of schools and kindergartens, with an additional 321 million euros planned or under construction. This significant investment reflects the city's dedication to providing quality education facilities for its residents.
The construction of the Emmy-Noether-Gymnasium is a testament to Offenbach's commitment to modern learning conditions and sustainable development. With its innovative design, energy-efficient features, and commitment to accessibility, the new school is set to become a beacon of progressive education in the city. Construction is scheduled to begin in November 2025 and complete by the end of 2028.
