The VANTAGE project, a significant initiative in European defence development, is being spearheaded by a consortium of partners from several European countries. The project's leadership alternates between an organisation from Germany and Latvia's LMT, as announced by Kaspars Pollaks, Director of the Defence Technology Department at LMT.

This collaborative effort, which includes organisations from Latvia, Belgium (2), France, Spain (2), Estonia, and Romania, is funded under the European Defence Fund's (EDF) 2024 call for collaborative defence research and development. The EU has pledged a maximum contribution of €10.09 million to the project, with an estimated total cost of €10.88 million.

The VANTAGE project aims to strengthen Europe's security, enhance operational flexibility, and set new standards for cooperation within the defence industry. The project will develop a modular, long-range, VTOL drone platform optimised for performance in diverse environments, including GPS-denied scenarios.

The VANTAGE drone platform is designed for maximum adaptability, seamlessly integrating new sensors and navigation systems as needed. This versatility makes it a valuable asset on the modern battlefield, where Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have proven to play a critical role, as demonstrated in Ukraine.

The platform will be capable of executing a wide range of Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) missions, and will also be capable of kinetic strikes. The VANTAGE project is part of a vision to contribute to a safer, more secure Europe.

Director Pollaks emphasised that the VANTAGE project marks a strategic leap for Europe in defence development, enhancing Europe's technological superiority and operational autonomy on the modern battlefield. The project is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in the pursuit of a more secure future for Europe.
