Meanwhile, the Russia-Ukraine war continues to rage on, with no end in sight. The US President, Donald Trump, has been at the forefront of efforts to end this conflict. Recently, summits between Trump, Putin, Zelensky, and European leaders have taken place in Alaska and Washington D.C., moving things forward in a way that European leaders couldn't or wouldn't.
However, the path to peace is fraught with challenges. Putin is believed to want a deal on his own terms, which may include the capitulation of Ukraine. Some critics argue that European leaders are guilty of hypocrisy in their handling of the war, as they express support for mediation efforts while continuing to import Russian gas.
Europe remains the second-largest importer of Russian gas in the world after China, despite sanctions packages against Russia. This dependence on Russian resources has led to criticism, with some arguing that if the West wanted to defeat Russia, it could stop importing Russian oil and gas or send in troops. However, neither option is popular due to the risks involved.
Amidst these complex geopolitical manoeuvres, the fate of Ukraine hangs in the balance. If the war continues, it will only be at the expense of the Ukrainians, whose future will be poisoned for generations. To save Ukrainian nationhood, the war must be stopped.
