Stellantis and Leapmotor Expand Electric Vehicle Offering in Europe

Stellantis, the multinational automobile manufacturing corporation, is making significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) market, particularly in Europe. The company holds a 51% stake in Leapmotor International joint venture, giving it exclusive rights to build, export, and sell Leapmotor products outside China.

The global demand for EVs is currently soft, but Stellantis is pressing ahead with electrification to comply with EU emission rules. In a move to widen the range of affordable EVs, Leapmotor, Stellantis' 15th brand, is expanding its offerings in Europe.

Two new models, the T03 compact car and the C10 SUV, were showcased for the first time in Europe near Milan. The T03 will be available from the end of September, with prices starting at 18,900 euros. The C10 SUV, set to hit dealerships in October, will start at 36,400 euros. Initially, the T03 will be imported from China, but it will also be assembled in Europe at Stellantis' Tychy plant in Poland. Assembling the T03 in Europe may help Leapmotor avoid European Union tariffs on imported Chinese EVs.

Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO, has hinted that the C10 model may be manufactured in Europe. However, specific details about the European manufacturing of the C10 model have not yet been revealed. If it does occur, the C10 could help Leapmotor avoid European Union tariffs on imported Chinese EVs (if not already being assembled in Europe).

The eMobility transition is politically divided, with the ACEA (European auto lobby) calling for relief from intermediate CO2 targets. However, Tavares is opposed to relief from these targets coming into effect in the EU in 2025. This stance aligns with Stellantis' commitment to producing EVs at the same price as petrol models.

Jean-Philippe Imparato, the Stellantis executive responsible for the manufacture of the Leapmotor C10 model in Europe, has not yet provided details about the European manufacturing of the C10 model. Leapmotor is starting to take orders in Europe for a city car and an SUV, with the C10 SUV being the more expensive of the two.

As Stellantis and Leapmotor continue to expand their EV offerings in Europe, they are set to make a significant impact on the affordable EV market. With the C10 SUV starting at 36,400 euros and the T03 compact car starting at 18,900 euros, these models are poised to offer competitive pricing for consumers looking to make the switch to electric.
