The international community is making significant strides in efforts to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a recent development, twenty-six countries, primarily European, have committed to forming a security force for Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement.

This announcement was made by French President Emmanuel Macron during a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following a meeting of these countries in Paris the day before. The force, intended to prevent new major aggression by Russia and ensure long-term security of Ukraine, will be present on land, at sea, and in the air.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin, however, has demanded that Ukraine cede territories and abandon Western support and NATO membership, while Kyiv has demanded an immediate ceasefire as a starting point for a peace agreement. The members of the Normandy Format, which includes France, Germany, Russia, and Ukraine, have confirmed their roles in providing the security guarantees required by Kyiv.

Notably, the force being deployed by more than 30 countries does not aim to wage war against Russia. Poland, serving as the main hub for aid to Ukraine, has stated that it does not plan to send soldiers to Ukraine.

In addition, discussions in Paris focused on making these security guarantees for Ukraine tangible and practical. Proposals for a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv have failed after more than three years of Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In an effort to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate, leaders have spoken by phone with US President Donald Trump. The United States has expressed their support for the decisions made by the group of Kyiv's allies.

Moreover, European countries, in conjunction with the United States, may impose new sanctions on Russia if it continues to reject negotiations for a peace agreement. Macron stated that there is a military plan detailing contributions to the Ukrainian army, and political texts will be formalized for a lasting peace agreement and potential multilateral or bilateral support agreements.

In a positive turn of events, new contacts between American and Russian authorities are expected. These developments mark a significant step toward resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and bringing lasting peace to the region.
