European Union Allocates Euro 116 Million for Ocean and Water Restoration Projects

The European Union has announced a significant investment of €116 million in 13 new projects aimed at restoring the health of the ocean and waters across various sea basins. This investment is a major step towards preserving offshore marine protected areas, protecting migratory fish habitats, reducing the environmental impact of fisheries, and empowering local communities.

One of the projects, SEAMPHONI, will utilise advanced technology to monitor offshore marine biodiversity. Another project, DanubeLifelines, will focus on restoring pathways for fish in the Danube River. The projects ECO-CATCH and MarineGuardian will develop new fishing technologies to reduce unwanted bycatch and protect marine habitats.

The projects, selected under the EU Mission Ocean and Waters calls, will be implemented across the Black Sea, Danube River, Baltic and North Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic, and Arctic regions. They will deliver benefits not only to the ocean and waters in the EU but also beyond its borders.

The projects involve a wide range of initiatives, from small and medium-sized enterprises to research organisations, local authorities, schools, and businesses. They aim to empower local communities to lead the restoration of ocean, seas, and waters. The investment is part of the Horizon Europe programme, which aims to address some of society's greatest challenges.

More details on the selected projects, including budget and beneficiaries, can be found on the EU Mission website. The EU Mission 'Restore our Ocean and Waters' is a key priority under the European Ocean Pact, and this investment reaffirms the EU's commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

The projects will focus on reducing the environmental impact of fisheries, with initiatives such as ECO-CATCH and MarineGuardian developing new technologies to minimise bycatch and protect marine ecosystems. The benefits of these projects will extend far beyond the fishing industry, as they will contribute to the overall health and preservation of our oceans and waters.

The peer evaluation of the projects was carried out by independent experts, ensuring the highest standards of research and innovation. The projects are a testament to the EU's ongoing efforts to restore the health of the ocean and waters, and they represent a significant step forward in the pursuit of a sustainable and healthy marine environment.
