Europe's Proposed Adjustments to Driving Permits Set to Affect Millions

The European Union has approved a reform of the driver's license directive, set to come into effect in 2028, that could significantly boost the camping market in the long term. This change allows motorhomes with a permissible total weight of up to 4.25 tons to be driven with a class B passenger car driver's license.

The reform, which increases the limit by 750 kilograms compared to the previous 3.5 tons, has sparked enthusiasm and hope among many EU drivers. It particularly benefits campers and families who can now drive larger vehicles without a class C1 truck driver's license.

As of now, Germany and many other EU countries have not yet implemented the new regulation into national law. There is no clear information on which countries have decided about additional training or exams for drivers of such motorhomes. Each EU country has the autonomy to decide on these matters, and the specific implementation of the new regulations can vary from country to country.

The development of heavier electric and hybrid motorhomes will be a focus with the new regulations. This could mean more variety in motorhomes available for vacationers, making it easier for families and beginners to start camping.

The change could make it easier for campers and families to travel with larger motorhomes. In 2024, 43 million overnight stays were recorded on campsites in the country, marking a 1.4% increase. With the new regulations, this number could potentially grow even further.

The new driver's license change could significantly boost the camping market in the long term. Additionally, the lively used motorhome market offers many buyers an attractive alternative. Many models that were previously out of reach for many vacationers will become accessible due to this change.

The new rules will come into effect in 2028, but until then, the 3.5-ton limit remains in place for motorhomes. The reform opens up new possibilities for millions of EU drivers, making it an exciting time for the camping and motorhome industry.
