Even the Safest Cities Haven't Escaped Women's Safety Concerns

In a significant development, the National Annual Report and Index on Women's Safety (NARI) 2025 was recently released in Delhi. The report, which surveyed 12,770 women across 31 cities in India, highlights the need for systemic changes to make urban areas safer for women.

The report reveals that the national safety score stands at 65%, with four out of every ten women feeling unsafe. The number of women aged 18 to 24 years reporting harassment has doubled from last year, with 38% citing their neighbourhoods as hotspots and 29% listing public transport as a major concern. Harassment remains under-reported, and night-time safety and mobility continue to be persistent pain points.

The report emphasizes that addressing women's safety in cities requires attention to systemic and infrastructural factors, not just low crime rates or an absence of violence against women. Trust in authorities is low, as per the report, and there are no search results available that identify specific authorities in India who have advised on systematic restructuring of systems and infrastructure to improve women's safety in cities since the publication of the NARI report 2025.

On a positive note, Mumbai, Kohima, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Aizawl, Gangtok, and Itanagar were rated as the safest cities, while Patna, Jaipur, Faridabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Srinagar, and Ranchi were rated as the least safe cities.

In an effort to boost women's safety, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is inducting its first-ever all-women commando team for core operations. The women commando team will take on duties in Quick Reaction Teams (QRT) and Special Task Force (STF) at high-security establishments and plants.

Meanwhile, the economic landscape in India is showing signs of growth. The Sensex and Nifty are soaring, with IT and public sector bank stocks leading the rally amidst rising GDP. However, it is crucial that these economic gains are accompanied by improvements in women's safety and security in urban areas.

Elsewhere, PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are seeking to reset India-China ties, stressing strategic cooperation. Additionally, Mobile Premier League is planning to lay off employees in India due to the ban on real money games.
