Ex-ASSE president Roland Romeyer faces two charges of sexual misconduct, including harassment and assault
In a recent turn of events, AS Saint-Etienne, a prominent French football club, finds itself embroiled in controversy following allegations against its former President, Roland Romeyer.
Romeyer, who served as the head of the club from 2004 to 2024 and was a prominent figure of the Greens before his retirement, has been accused of "harassment and sexist insults." The identities of the two applicants who have filed complaints against him remain undisclosed.
The accusations, revealed by Le Progres on Wednesday, have left Romeyer surprised and confused. In a statement, he expressed, "I'm floored." He also claimed that "no one has questioned him" regarding the accusations, and that he had not been warned about them.
In response, AS Saint-Etienne issued a statement condemning all forms of violence and inappropriate behavior. The club also stated that it will let justice take its course and that an audit was conducted within the club regarding possible actions of Romeyer.
As part of the audit, all women of the club were interviewed. Several anonymous testimonies were collected by the police regarding Romeyer's actions. The accusations against him involve actions committed while he was still in office.
Following Romeyer's retirement, Ivan Gazidis and the Canadian group Kilmer Sports Ventures took over the club. The club's current leadership has not yet issued a statement directly addressing the allegations against Romeyer.
As the investigation continues, the football community awaits further developments in this unfolding story.
