Ex-Bishop Friedrich Passes Away - Ex-Bishop Friedrich passes away.
In a sombre announcement, the Bavarian Evangelical Church confirmed the passing of its former state bishop, Johannes Friedrich, on Wednesday in Nuremberg. He was 77 years old.
Johannes Friedrich served as the evangelical church's state bishop in the Free State from 1999 to 2011, following a distinguished career that spanned over four decades. His tenure was marked by a deep commitment to his faith and a dedication to his work.
Christian Kopp, the current state bishop, paid tribute to his predecessor, stating that Friedrich's personal relationship with God was the driving force behind his work. Kopp admired how lovingly, attentively, and purposefully Friedrich worked, and he described him as a man who embodied how Christian faith grants the freedom to shape life well.
Prior to his role as state bishop, Friedrich led the Christ König parish as a pastor from 1970 to 1985. He then served as Provost of the Evangelical German-speaking community in Jerusalem from 1985, and later became Dean of the Evangelical Lutheran Deanery in Nuremberg starting in 1991.
Friedrich was also known for his ecumenical efforts, standing up for a church right in the middle of the world. His work as a bridge-builder was recognised and respected by many.
Reflecting on Friedrich's passing, Kopp expressed his condolences and reminisced about the impact Friedrich had on his life and the lives of many others. "Johannes Friedrich was a man of deep faith, who lived out his beliefs with passion and conviction," Kopp said. "His legacy will continue to inspire us as we carry on his work."
The funeral arrangements for Johannes Friedrich have yet to be announced. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
