Ex-convict and acclaimed poet, Reginald Dwayne Betts.
In a captivating event held at the Prior Performing Arts Center on February 26, 2023, Reginald Dwayne Betts, a renowned poet, lawyer, and criminal justice advocate, addressed a packed auditorium. The News Editor at the College of the Holy Cross, Betts shared insights on themes of incarceration, redemption, and the life of the mind, leaving a lasting impression on those in attendance.
Betts, who served eight years in an adult prison, has since become a powerful advocate for art and social justice in the criminal justice system. His foundation, "Freedom Reads," empowers people through literature to confront the effects of incarceration on the spirit.
The event was particularly enjoyable and engaging for Kieran Corcoran '24, a student in attendance. Corcoran found Betts' casual yet sincere tone, often punctuated with light profanity to alleviate tension, particularly engaging.
Meanwhile, in the world of sports, the final stretch of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season is known for being one of the most competitive in all of sports. With around 20 games left in the season, teams are fighting hard to secure their place in the playoffs.
Unfortunately, the Boston Red Sox, a team that had high hopes this season, recently faced a setback with the firing of their Chief Baseball Officer, Chaim Bloom. Bloom was hired with the hope that he would help transition the team from an expensive, negatively trending team, to a cheaper contender anchored by young players.
As for the College of the Holy Cross, Jake Ruderman '26 serves as the Sports Editor, while George Caldwell '24 holds the position of News Editor. The Prior Performing Arts Center has hosted many great showings this semester, including Betts' talk, demonstrating its commitment to bringing diverse and thought-provoking events to its students and the wider community.
Betts, a Yale Law School graduate and acclaimed poet, has received numerous accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018 and a MacArthur Fellowship in 2021. His work, which deals with themes of incarceration, redemption, and the life of the mind, continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
