Archaeologists uncovered a golden arm ring and amber trinkets during their digs - Excavated Gold Bracelet and Amber Jewelry
In the picturesque town of Alzey, Rhineland-Palatinate, a significant archaeological discovery has been made, paving the way for Eli Lilly's new medication production facility. The facility, scheduled to commission by the end of 2027, is a top political and economic priority for the region.
The excavations, conducted by the state archaeology department, covered approximately 60 hectares and uncovered findings from the Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman Imperial period, and early modern times. Among the discoveries, a Roman grave with vessel grave goods in a lead-lined coffin, a golden bracelet from the late Bronze Age, and a notable Neolithic find including a body grave with vessel and bead jewelry were highlighted.
Grave goods found included pottery shards, animal bones, flint tools, and various types of jewelry made from materials such as iron, bronze, and amber. The excavations also revealed structures such as settlement pits and burial sites. A total of approximately 1,500 archaeological findings have been discovered during excavations on the grounds of the Alzey industrial estate.
Ulrich Himmelmann, the acting state archaeologist, has been involved in the major excavation in Alzey. The exact date when he assumed his archaeologist position in Alzey is not specified.
The new facility, which is expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs in Alzey, is part of a larger biotechnology and industrial hub initiative in the town. The Interior Minister responsible for the announcement of these findings and the top political priority for this project is Michael Ebling (SPD).
Eli Lilly is investing around 2.3 billion euros in a production facility for injectable medications in Alzey. The company plans to commission the new facility by the end of 2027, marking a significant step forward in the town's economic development.
As the dust settles on the archaeological excavations, building plots for the new high-tech production facility of the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly are now available for construction. The town of Alzey eagerly awaits the completion of this project, which promises to bring new opportunities and growth to the region.
