Peter Speliopoulos and Robert Turner's Holiday Home in the Ancient Heart of Patmos

Peter Speliopoulos, a 64-year-old individual who transitioned from a career in fashion to ceramics and homewares design in 2018, currently resides in a holiday home in Chora, the ancient heart of the Greek island of Patmos. He shares this home with his husband, Robert Turner.

The pair first discovered the Corner House and bought the Lion House unseen, drawn by the island's allure. The Corner House, lived in until the 1970s, was remarkably intact, while the Lion House boasts a more contemporary master bedroom with a custom bed and Malian indigo textile designer Aboubakar Fofana's bedspread.

The houses were in need of restoration, and Speliopoulos and Turner enlisted the help of Katerina Tsigarida, a professional involved in architecture or restoration. Together, they wove the history of Patmos across two interconnected houses, restoring them over time. The "Ottoman Room" in the Corner House is a welcoming space with a ticking-stripe banquette and suzani cushions. The Lion House features a monastic-style dining room with original floor tiles that survived the 1953 earthquake.

Speliopoulos and Turner's houses are filled with treasures from all over the Mediterranean and the near east. A 1920s necklace from the Ute tribe and vintage '50s Diné rings adorn Peter Speliopoulos's fingers. They settled on a home just steps from the main square of Chora, immersing themselves in the island's rich history.

The architecture of Patmos reflects its legacy as both a religious sanctuary and a wealthy trading port. The medieval village of Chora, where Peter Speliopoulos resides, has whitewashed houses, labyrinthine passageways, archways, and is wrapped around the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, founded in 1088. The Monastery was built near the cave in which Saint John is said to have received his divine revelations, lending the island its historic significance as a centre of Christianity.

Speliopoulos and Turner avoid Patmos in July and August and prefer to come in June, September, and October, when the island is less crowded. They have woven their own story into the tapestry of Patmos, creating a home that reflects the island's history while offering a contemporary twist.

Peter Speliopoulos was seen recently wearing a cobalt linen shirt by 45R Global, khaki trousers by Jonathan Anderson for Uniqlo, and Prada fisherman's sandals, embodying the effortless style that has become synonymous with the island. The pair continue to make Patmos their home away from home, cherishing the island's history and beauty.
