New Long-Distance Cycling Route Unveiled in England

The Royal Chilterns Way, a 175-mile (280 km) long-distance cycling adventure, has been launched in England. This multi-day bikepacking route, meticulously crafted by Cycling UK's ride guide and route planner, Max Darkins, offers an opportunity to escape and connect with nature.

The route, which begins and ends in Reading, is easily accessible by public transport, with the Elizabeth Line or Great Western Railway from Paddington providing convenient access. For those who prefer a slower pace, the trail is divided into three shorter circuits. More than 65% of the journey is off-road along bridleways, forest tracks, and byways.

Cycling is not just a mode of transport; it's a low-impact aerobic exercise that strengthens the heart, lungs, and muscles while improving overall fitness. It also boosts mental health by reducing stress, enhancing mood, and supporting better sleep. The European Cyclists' Federation reports that cycling tourism now generates over €44 billion each year, supporting thousands of small businesses.

The Royal Chilterns Way passes through various cultural and historical landmarks such as Reading Royal Abbey, Chenies Manor House, Berkhamsted Castle, Henley-on-Thames, Amersham, and Wendover. Cyclists can expect to encounter local wildlife like lizards, deer, red kites, and wallabies along the route. The trail also passes through farm shops, cafes, vineyards, breweries, and country pubs, offering a unique blend of rural charm and culinary delights.

The Chilterns Conservation Board was involved in the planning and development of the new long-distance cycle path through the Chiltern Hills, besides Cycling UK. Proceeds from the guidebooks support the development of future routes. Each route comes with a weather-resistant guidebook that provides detailed navigation, Ordnance Survey mapping, and insights into local landmarks.

Cycling UK's launch of the Royal Chilterns Way reflects their goal of encouraging people to embrace the health benefits of cycling. With around 3,383 metres of climbing, the route presents a challenging but rewarding experience. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or a beginner, the Royal Chilterns Way offers a unique and memorable cycling adventure.

Routes for the Royal Chilterns Way are available for free download from the Cycling UK website as GPX files, compatible with both cycling computers and smartphones. So, gear up and embark on this exciting journey through the heart of England!
