Expanded Online Services: Amplifying user-friendly digital offerings via our city's web gateway
In the heart of Essen, the Volksgarten Kray is undergoing an exciting transformation. The park is being developed into a smart citizen park, integrating innovative features such as an E-bike charging station, intelligent lighting, soil moisture sensors, a smart bench, and a selfie point.
This development is part of Essen's broader Smart City initiative, which is making significant strides in digitizing its administrative services and improving urban life. The city portal now offers over 500 digital administrative services, making it easier for citizens to access essential services online, from business registration to certificate requests and document orders.
The Smart City Project Database, a new addition, houses over 60 current Smart City projects categorised under five main areas: digital administration, environment and climate, smart mobility, social life, and infrastructure and data. This database offers valuable insights into the city's Smart City progress and highlights projects in various sectors.
Peter Adelskamp, the city's Chief Digital Officer, and Annabelle Brandes, Head of Human Resources, General Administration, and Digitalization, are leading the charge in Essen's Smart City development. The Smart City Dashboard, a tool displaying Smart City key figures in an easily understandable format, is one of their key achievements. The Dashboard provides real-time information on various urban development themes in a compact overview, supporting the city administration, decision-makers, and citizens in making data-driven decisions.
The pilot projects in Volksgarten Kray will be evaluated, and their transferability to other parks in the city will be examined. Further implementation projects will be identified through citizen participation to make the park more attractive and maintain its function as a social meeting and interaction place.
Looking ahead, Essen is planning a Smart City idea competition for children and youth, named "Young & Smart in Essen", scheduled for 2026. Preparations for this exciting event are already underway.
The city portal continues to evolve, with plans to expand the Smart City Dashboard with more areas and information. By the end of 2025, additional services such as applying for a certificate of good conduct or registering a business will be available online.
Essen's Smart City journey is progressing, and with initiatives like the Volksgarten Kray development and the "Young & Smart in Essen" competition, the city is committed to making urban life smarter, more sustainable, and more interactive.
