Expanded Oversight Captures 200 Hectares within the Lekki Free Trade Zone for a Construction of Building Supplies Center

In a significant move towards promoting local content and curbing rising building material costs, the Federal Government of Nigeria has secured an investor for a building materials hub in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos. The investor, Africa Capital Alliance (ACA), will fund and manage the hub, which is expected to be returned to the government after recovering their investments.

The hub, designed to support sustainable housing delivery across the country, will produce roofing sheets, ceilings, tiles, doors, and other essential building materials. Each hub, planned for each of Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, will also provide essential infrastructure such as power, water, and worker accommodation.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Mr Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed the development during a tour of industrial areas within the Lekki and Lagos Free Zones. He explained that the hubs, aimed at promoting local content in the construction sector, are intended to reduce reliance on imported materials and save foreign exchange.

The hub in the Lekki Free Trade Zone will be supported by intermodal transport infrastructure, including seaports, airports, railways, and roads, ensuring easy access to raw materials and efficient distribution of finished products. This interconnectedness is crucial in facilitating the hub's mission to lower housing production costs nationwide.

Investors are encouraged to submit their own designs for the hubs, reflecting the unique characteristics of each geopolitical zone. The hubs are also expected to create jobs through local manufacturing, contributing to Nigeria's employment sector.

The hubs, located in Sagamu (Ogun), Aba (Abia), Warri/Asaba (Delta), Ajaokuta (Kogi), Kano (Kano), and Gombe (Gombe), are part of the government's efforts to encourage domestic production in the construction sector and support sustainable housing delivery.

This initiative is a step towards achieving a self-sufficient and resilient construction industry in Nigeria, ultimately benefiting the economy and the citizens. The building materials hub in the Lekki Free Trade Zone is set to pave the way for similar developments, fostering a culture of local production and sustainable housing delivery.
