Expanding childcare facilities in Nordhorn, municipal efforts underway
Nordhorn to Expand Childcare Services
Nordhorn, a city in Lower Saxony, is set to significantly increase its childcare capacity in response to a growing demand for such services. The city's administration, under the leadership of Mayor Thomas Berling, has been actively working on this expansion for some time.
In a recent development, the council approved the expansion of an existing childcare facility to include a nursery group. This expansion is part of a larger plan that includes renovations and expansions of existing facilities as mid-term solutions.
Mayor Berling and his administration have been identifying potential spaces and possibilities for the development of new care offers. The goal is to make these offers available as early as the new kindergarten year, or at least by the beginning of 2019.
One such initiative is the establishment of a two-group daycare center in nearby areas like Hesepe-Torfwerk. This project involves partnerships with municipal councils and local government bodies.
In the short term, the city administration aims to develop 30 to 40 care spots by the end of the year. The specialist committee is currently discussing short-term solutions for increasing childcare spaces in Nordhorn.
In the long term, new daycare centers are to be built in Nordhorn. A large kindergarten with 45 nursery and 50 kindergarten spots is set to begin construction in the Deegfeld area in January 2019.
The current demand for childcare spots in Nordhorn has increased significantly, with a shortage of around 300 nursery spots and over 100 regular spots for the current year. This increase is due to factors such as the planned fee-free kindergarten years one and two by the state government, the council's decision to reduce fees in Nordhorn, the current excellent employment situation, and the increasing societal acceptance of non-family early childhood education, care, and education.
Mayor Berling has emphasized the need for qualified staff for the operation of kindergartens in Nordhorn. He hopes for clear support from the state of Lower Saxony for necessary significant investments and long-term measures.
The city administration is in constructive and goal-oriented discussions with the district administration, the recently formed parents' initiative KiTa, and facility providers, who face additional challenges due to the shortage of educational staff.
The proposal will be presented to the politics of Nordhorn in the near future.
