Expanding rosters in September could potentially bring up two promising prospects from the Cardinals organization.
Cardinals Consider Calling Up Relief Pitcher Oddanier Mosqueda
The St. Louis Cardinals are considering bringing up relief pitcher Oddanier Mosqueda to bolster their southpaw relief options, following the trade of left-handed pitcher Steven Matz.
Mosqueda, a 26-year-old right-handed pitcher, has impressed during his time with Triple-A Memphis this season. He has finished nine games and earned two saves, while maintaining a 3.92 ERA through 57.1 innings pitched. Mosqueda's unique delivery and vast array of pitches allow him to exploit hitters' weaknesses, with his fastball sitting in the low-90s and a five-pitch mix at his disposal.
His slider and changeup generate whiffs at rates beyond 40%, making him a formidable opponent for batters. In particular, Mosqueda has been successful against left-handed hitters this year, posting a batting line of .153/.263/.245.
However, Mosqueda's walks are a bit high, with a 3.6 BB/9 ratio. This could be a concern for the Cardinals, but his impressive strikeout numbers (9.3 K/9 ratio, resulting in 59 strikeouts this year) suggest that he can be effective despite this issue.
If the Cardinals decide to assess Mosqueda's potential, they may choose to give him some run down the stretch. Potential candidates for release to make room for Mosqueda on the 40-man roster include Jorge Alcala, Chris Roycroft, and Anthony Veneziano.
Alcala, a 30-year-old right-handed pitcher, was claimed off waivers by the Cardinals from the Boston Red Sox on August 7, 2025. Veneziano, who was given a chance, has allowed two runs in only four innings and was recently demoted.
Mosqueda was a member of the New York Yankees Triple-A roster before being selected by the Cardinals in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft last winter. If the Cardinals want to keep Mosqueda beyond this season, they would need to add him to the 40-man roster. However, Mosqueda would once again be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this winter.
In his brief stint at Jupiter, Mosqueda struck out three batters, allowed five hits, and gave up one earned run. Overall, Mosqueda's performance this season suggests that he could be a valuable addition to the Cardinals' bullpen, and the team may decide to give him a chance to prove himself at the major league level.
