Expanding support for child and youth services in the city will last for the coming five years
In a significant move, Mayor Erik Lierenfeld and youth facility providers in Dormagen signed new contracts for open youth work on August 26. These contracts, set to come into force on January 1, 2026, and apply until the end of 2030, aim to create more quality and flexible structures in open youth work that respond to the actual needs of young people.
The new contracts will benefit the "Micado" in Dormagen-Mitte and the "Rübe" in Horrem. These facilities will be able to employ additional specialist staff to offer new programs in culture, democracy promotion, and mental health, specifically addressing current social challenges.
The new programs are designed to provide additional leisure opportunities for young people aged 14 and over, and to promote encounters and participation. Initially, four events per year are planned - one per quarter. These events will offer young people a variety of activities to engage in and foster a sense of community.
The city of Dormagen will provide an annual "action fund" of 12,000 euros for large, cross-institutional events with an event character. This funding will help facilitate these events and ensure their success.
The new contracts also provide new content impulses for the facilities. Mike Wetzel, head of the department for children, youth, families, and school, stated that the new contracts will result in concrete improvements for the facilities. He emphasized that the new contracts will ensure financial security for the next five years for these facilities, providing them with the stability they need to plan and implement their programs effectively.
The new contracts also explicitly support the use of volunteers, benefiting smaller facilities and offering opportunities for young people to engage socially and learn about the social profession. This approach will not only strengthen the facilities but also foster a sense of community and social responsibility among young people.
Mayor Lierenfeld emphasized the importance of offering reliable points of contact for young people in Dormagen with necessary offers. He stated that these new contracts lay the foundation for modern and future-oriented youth work in all districts of the city. A review is planned after three years to make any necessary adjustments, ensuring that the programs remain relevant and effective in addressing the needs of young people in Dormagen.
