Expands border surveillance at the Poland-Germany and Poland-Lithuania borders

In a significant move for border security and immigration control, the Polish government has announced the extension of temporary border controls at the crossings between Poland and Germany, as well as Poland and Lithuania. The extension, which was announced by Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski on Sunday, will last until October 4, 2023.

The decision to extend the border controls was the result of a security meeting with provincial governors and heads of border services. The extension is in response to pressure on Poland's eastern border, with increasing migration pressure, especially from Belarusian services redirecting migrant routes. This move is aimed at closing smuggling systems into the EU.

The Polish government has officially submitted the extension of border controls to the European Commission for notification. The European Commission will officially notify the extension, and the Polish government is coordinating with the Commission regarding this matter.

The extension of the border controls is being implemented in close coordination with European partners. This extends to Poland's neighbours, Lithuania and Latvia, with whom Polish officials are working to further secure the Polish-Lithuanian border.

The extension of the border controls will impact cross-border traffic, requiring adjustments such as traffic flow changes on Germany’s A12 highway to manage congestion caused by these controls.

According to Marcin Kierwinski, the current problem is closing the shifted migration route to Lithuania and Latvia. The minister emphasised that the relevant regulation for the extension of the border controls has been submitted to the European Commission for official notification.

The extension of the border controls is a significant move in terms of border security and immigration control, as Poland seeks to maintain its border integrity in the face of increasing migration pressure.
