Expands military preparedness in anticipation of potential assault on Gaza City, Israel

In the troubled region of Gaza, growing international pressure is mounting on Israel to halt its offensive. The Israeli military has been making logistical and operational preparations for expanded combat operations, with Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz approving the military's plans for the conquest of Gaza City in late August.

The offensive is aimed at eradicating Hamas and returning hostages seized by Palestinian militants in their October 7, 2023 attack that sparked the war. However, the situation in Gaza City is dire, with a famine declared in the area and over a million people living there.

The Israeli military has declared Gaza City a "dangerous combat zone," and approximately 60,000 reservists have been called up for the planned offensive. Tragically, at least 45 people have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza City, including 10 in an air strike on a residential building in the southwest of Gaza City. One acknowledged incident of civilian casualties near an aid point in the centre of Gaza has also been reported.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and various nations have expressed concern over the potential evacuation of Gaza City. ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric deems evacuation "not only unfeasible but incomprehensible under the present circumstances" due to the dire state of shelter, healthcare, and nutrition in Gaza. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot has stated that "firm sanctions are being imposed against the Israeli government" in view of the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Gaza.

In a positive development, Belgium has announced its intention to recognize the State of Palestine at the U.N. General Assembly this month, joining France, Australia, Malta, Belgium, Canada, and the United Kingdom, who have already made similar declarations. New Zealand is also considering recognition.

Despite the mounting pressure, the Israeli military spokesman considers the evacuation of Gaza City "inevitable." Sanaa al-Dreimli, a resident of Gaza City, witnessed an air strike that resulted in the death of a girl and injuries to many others. The verification of the tolls and details provided by the civil defense agency or the Israeli military is difficult due to media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas.

As the situation continues to escalate, it is crucial that all parties involved prioritise the safety and well-being of civilians in Gaza City and work towards a peaceful resolution to this conflict.
