Holy Cross Students Participate in National March for Life and Begin New Mission Initiative

In a series of significant events, students from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, embarked on a journey of faith and advocacy, participating in the 2024 National March for Life in Washington, D.C., and initiating a new mission-focused endeavour on campus.

The journey began on Thursday, January 18, with a special Mass in the chapel of the new Jesuit community residence. Fr. Jim Hayes, S.J. presided, and Fr. John Gavin, S.J. concelebrated. This was the first student Mass offered in the sacred space. After the ceremony, final directions were given, everyone donned purple hats, and they boarded two vans for the road trip to Washington, D.C.

Seven students and two priests from Holy Cross participated in the 2024 National March for Life. The event, held at the D.C. Armory, included Mass, a rally, and the March itself. Despite the low temperatures, spirits were high throughout the day.

On a more sombre note, the College community was informed of two upcoming departures. Rev. William R. Campbell, S.J., Vice President for Mission, announced his leaving Holy Cross on March 13, 2020. He has been appointed as the director of the Eastern Point Retreat House in Gloucester, Massachusetts, but the search results do not provide information about his successor at the College.

In a separate announcement made on September 24, 2019, Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J. revealed his intention to retire at the end of the 2020-2021 academic year after nine years of dedicated service. Fr. Boroughs was instrumental in launching a new mission initiative on campus, the Mission Priority Examen, which seeks to reaffirm the Jesuit mission and identity of the College of the Holy Cross.

The Mission Priority Examen is an Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) initiative. It was announced in a September 14 letter to the campus community, and Fr. Boroughs made the official announcement during his Fall Address. Margaret "Peggy" Hartshorn, Ph.D., the former President and now Chair of the Board of Heartbeat International, was present at the conference.

As the College of the Holy Cross continues to navigate these changes, the spirit of faith, advocacy, and community remains strong among its students and faculty. The departure of Rev. Campbell and Fr. Boroughs marks the end of an era, but the Mission Priority Examen promises a renewed focus on the Jesuit mission and identity, ensuring the College's commitment to its values remains steadfast.
